Yoga: Holistic Health for a Holistic Life
A huge part of a holistic lifestyle comes from looking after yourself. Whether that is your physical health, your mental health or your spiritual health, finding the balance is key to a healthy and happy life.
Yoga has been a part of Indian history and tradition for as long as we can remember. The most ancient texts and art from the Indian subcontinent make references to the practice of Yoga. But how many of us truly understand it?
Yoga: Benefits for body and soul
Practised since the 5th century, the Sanskrit word, “Yoga” literally means union. Yoga believes that your body, mind and soul are far more connected than we give them credit. There is more to it than simply exercising your body. It combines, poses, breathing exercises and mindfulness to bring you a lifestyle that goes beyond the 10 minutes you spend on the mat.
Yoga poses or, asanas, are designed to stretch and exercise each muscle in your body. If you’re looking to build muscle tone and flexibility, we cannot recommend asanas enough. Each asana is also accompanied by deep breaths. This targets the blood flow and internal systems in your body. Round it off with Dhyana, or a conscious effort to regulate your thoughts, and you get a true union between your body and mind. Anybody on the lookout for a holistic workout regimen, need not look any further!
Prep for International Yoga Day!
Since 2015, the UN has celebrated International Yoga Day on 21st June. It also happens to be the summer solstice. It seems fitting that this day is celebrated on the longest day of the year.
Entering the 2nd year of the pandemic, it is now clear, more than ever that our mental health is just as important as our physical health. Whether you are a survivor of Covid, or not, the social isolation, stress of the new work life, and the worry for friends and family have piled up within us all. Not surprisingly, psychological issues like Depression and Anxiety are on the rise.
With that in mind, the theme for International Yoga Day this year is ‘Yoga for well-being’.
The idea is to tap into the holistic health and mindful attitude that comes with practising Yoga. It can help you stay fit, both physically and mentally, without leaving the house. It also has the added bonus of leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
