The 30th of October is celebrated as Thrift Day or Savings Day in India while the same day is observed globally on the 31st of October.

What is thrifting you ask? In simple terms, thrifting means shopping for secondhand goods. Unlike fast fashion, thrifting gives you an opportunity to give new life to old items that would otherwise end up in landfills.

People across the world thrift shop for various reasons from opting to a more sustainable lifestyle to hunting for unique one of a kind pieces. After all, you know what they say. One man’s waste is another man’s treasure. As we are all becoming more and more aware of our impact on the environment and the trail of carbon footprint the fashion industry leaves , thrifting automatically becomes a great alternative due to its principles of reusing and repurposing.

Here’s why thrifting is a great idea

Reuse, reuse, reuse -

In a world where we are constantly flooded with options, thrifting promotes reusing and repurposing of old clothes, furniture, utensils, electronics that reduces wastage, promotes a sustainable lifestyle and along the way helps you save money to the contrary.

Good for the environment -

Thrifting usually denotes shopping with a purpose. A purpose to do for your environment by reducing waste, pollution and being a mindful consumer. Thrifting is essentially recycling where you are choosing preloved items over newly produced pieces and in return you are limiting the amount of natural resources it would have taken otherwise for you to shop for an entirely new piece.

Promotes a circular economy -

Thrifting promotes a very circular economy where each piece is properly used, reused, recycled or upcycled but never wasted. This is what we can call circular fashion where one piece is created, bought, rebought, reused and then finally recycled. Not to mention giving, you are empowering your local shops and businesses which is good for the economy.

Diverse Wardrobe -

Thrifting gives you an opportunity to explore new styles, fashions and pieces that you would otherwise not look for. Thrift stores are also great to find one-of-a kind, unique pieces that you won’t find elsewhere

On Thrift Day, let's try to be more mindful of our shopping choices and be open to reselling and reusing.
